Magnesium deficiency caused in the myocardium of rats during 5 weeks of the experiment (from the 3rd week on) the following morphological and histochemical changes: focal progressing increase in acidophilic staining of myocardial fibres, initially small, involving only several sarcomeres or isolated myocardial fibres, then larger and more numerous necrotic foci associated with infiltrations composed of mononuclear cells, loss of cross striatation of muscle fibres and their fragmentation, undulant outline of myocardial fibres, increased amount of p.a.S.-positive substance resistant to digestion with diastase in the foci of damaged cardiomyocytes, calcium deposits in the degenerated or necrotic myocardial fibres and around the myocardial vessels, increased activity of acid phosphatase, decreased activity of alkaline phosphatase. After cooling of the animals disseminated degenerative and necrotic lesions and disturbances of enzyme activity developed earlier (up to the 2nd week of the experiment) and were more intense.
