Histological changes in mucosa of rat's jejunum, caused by a low magnesium diet

Of 40 male Wistar rats weighing 160 to 180 g initially, 30 were given a diet deficient in magnesium and 10 a stock diet. Some were killed every week during the first 5 weeks and subsequently in weeks 7, 9, 12 and 14. By week 3 there was marked oedema of the stroma of the intestinal villi and during weeks 7 and 9 shortening and broadening of many villi occurred in rats given the deficient diet. By week 14 giant villi, irregular in shape, had appeared and the stroma was infiltrated by lymphocytes.
