Rats were given a synthetic diet deficient in Mg or the same with 0.8 g magnesium sulphate/100 g diet. After 60 days histology of liver in the rats deprived of Mg showed reduced cytoplasmic content and focal necrosis in hepatocytes, increased numbers of Kupffer cells filled with Fe-positive granules and dilatation of blood vessels, especially sinusoids and centrolobular veins. Minor regenerative changes were seen involving hepatocytes but not biliary duct cells.
