The use of adriamycin in doses of 1.6 mg/kg for three consecutive days of each week for three weeks caused the following morphological and histochemical changes in rat myocardium .sbd. increased acidophilia and fuchsinophilia of the cytoplasm of a part and whole myocardial fibers, undulant outline of myocardial fibers, contraction bands, isolated foci of infiltrations composed of mononuclear cells, increased glycogen content of some myocardial fibers, swelling of mitochondria with disorganization, fragmentation and breakdown of their cristae, dilatation of the tubules in the sarcoplasmic reticulum and transverse tubules, membranaceous and myelin-like figures in the dilated tubules of the smooth reticulum and in degenerated mitochondria, numerous lysosomal structures, focal widening of the intercalated discs in the myocardium, focal lysis of myofilaments within one or several sarcomeres, focal increase of the activity of acid phosphatase, unchanged activity of alkaline phosphatase, ATPases and succinic dehydrogenase.
