Three artificial media enriched with animal (rabbit or goat) sera and red blood cells [RBC] were used and compared in S. japonicum in vitro cultures. Both adult worms and schistosomula survived on the amino acids, serum and RBC as nutrients. Adults were maintained for long periods of time, but decreased in size, had intestinal swelling and degeneration of the reproductive system. Some growth was observed in schistosomula, indicating that nutritional and environmental requirements of adults and schistosomula in vitro differ. Growth rate might be enhanced by changing the medium regularly and maintaining a proper pH.
