Schistosomal and malarial pigment were clearly distinguishable before and after extraction from the livers of white mice infected with S. japonicum and Plasmodium berghei, respectively, or infected with both parasites. Elemental X-ray analysis revealed the presence of iron in both pigments, located in the parasite as well as in the purified pigment. Histochemically the schistosomal pigment resembled malarial and formalin pigment, and did not resemble melanin.
