Soluble egg antigen preparation (SEA) invoked an intense, mainly cell-mediated granulomatous response in mice during chronic primary Schistosoma mansoni infection. The anti-SEA responses were followed for a year and analysed in connection with the diminution of granuloma formation during continued antigenic exposure, which occurred from 10 to 12 weeks after infection onwards. Fluctuations of various immune responses to SEA indicated several mechanisms to explain the immunoregulatory interactions which result in diminished lesion formation in this chronic infection.
