IgE concentration in rats infected with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis was raised and, after reinfection, reached levels several hundred times above normal. Purified mast cells from infected rats released histamine on exposure to worm antigen and the antibody specific for IgE released histamine from mast cells of both infected and uninfected rats. Labelling studies of the IgE/mast cell association indicate that many of the IgE receptors on the cells were occupied by their own IgE. The histamine and intracellular cyclic nucleotide content of mast cells from infected and uninfected rats appeared to be the same.
