The ability of different stages of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis to potentiate reagin responses was studied using female Hooded Lister rats. The life-cycle of N. brasiliensis in the rats was restricted on the one hand to the migrating larval phase by radiation-attenuation (45 krad gamma Co60 radiation) of infective larvae or treatment of the rats with thiabendazole (80 mg/kg body-weight in aqueous suspension, given by stomach tube), and on the other hand to the gut phase by surgical transplantation of adult worms (from donor rats 8 days after infection) into the small intestine. Ovalbumin reagin titres were estimated by the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) tests with rat sera. IgE responses were potentiated by both migrating larvae and by adult worms confined to the small intestinal lumen, the latter being the more effective.
