Sindbis virus replication in vertebrate and mosquito cells: an interpretation

A summary is given of recent comparative studies of replication of Sindbis virus in cell cultures of Aedes albopictus (Skuse), A. aegypti (L.), BHK21 or chick embryos. Viral growth kinetics and yields in cells of A. albopictus at 28 deg C were similar to those in vertebrate cells at 37 deg C. A. albopictus showed no cytopathic effects and yielded persistently infected cultures. Possible implications of the observations for the natural life-cycle of arthropod-borne togaviruses are discussed.
