Amphotericin B therapy in two cases of feline cryptococcosis

Case reports are given of 2 cats, with upper respiratory signs, both of which subsequently developed nasal polyps identified as cryptococcal granulomas. Amphotericin B in powder form was reconstituted in sterile water, diluted with 5% dextrose and given by intravenous injection 3 times a week to one animal, which recovered and showed no signs of recurrence of the condition in a 3-yr follow-up period. Treatment was given intermittently over 4 months, with temporary discontinuations when blood urea nitrogen values rose sharply. Amphotericin B, given in normal saline by slow intravenous drip, was unsuccessful in treating the other animal, although prior treatment, for another condition, with broad-spectrum antibiotics and steroids may have had an adverse effect on the chances of recovery.
