Fatal Tyzzer's disease is described in two kittens; one (case A) was inoculated i/v at 4 months of age with ascitic fluid from a cat with suspected infectious peritonitis, the other was inoculated i/p at 2-3 weeks of age with spontaneous edenocarcinoma material from a hamster kept in the same room as case A. The P.M. finding resembled those of Tyzzer's disease, except that case A had associated lesions of feline infectious peritonitis. Histologically, bacilli were seen within endothelial cells of the liver and epithelial cells of the intestinal mucosa. Mice inoculated i/v with liver emulsion from case A developed liver necrosis similar to that in Tyzzer's disease; six passages in mice were carried out followed by i/p inoculation of three 10-day-old kittens, but none of these developed liver lesions. Both strains are being maintained by mouse inoculation, and their antigenic relationship is being studied.
