In Austria, various species of wild ruminant (Capreolus capreolus, Cervus elaphus, Cervus (Sika) nippon, Dama dama, Ovis ammon and Rupicapra rupicapra) were treated with mebendazole in the food. Medication for 3 days at rates equivalent to 15 mg/kg body-weight was both more effective and more practicable than 10 days medication at 3 mg/kg. The drug was effective against Trichostrongylidae, Strongylidae, Ancylostomatidae, Trichuridae and Protostrongylinae. Mebendazole was also tested against nematodes of domestic sheep at the same rates. 15 mg/kg for 3 days was highly effective against Trichostrongylidae. There was also some effect against Muellerius capillaris and Neostrongylus linearis, but this declined in proportion to the extent of pathological changes in the lungs.
