In a study of 12 P. multocida strains isolated from wild ruminants in the USA between 1934 and 1985, somatic serotypes were determined using a gel diffusion precipitin test and capsular serogroups using an indirect haemagglutination test. The rarely reported capsular serogroup B was present in deer, pronghorn, bison and elk. Three different somatic serotypes (1, 2 and 3,4) were represented within serogroup B, resulting in their characterisation as B:1, B:2 and B:3,4. Serogroup A strains were characterised as A:2 and A:3,4. This is believed to be the first description of the B:1 and B:3,4 strains isolated in the USA. The importance of these capsular B strains playing a role in haemorrhagic septicaemia is discussed.
