Serological comparison of Kagoshima and Chuzan viruses of Palyam serogroup orbivirus isolated in Japan

An orbivirus isolated from Culicoides oxystoma in Kagoshima in 1984 was shown to belong to the Palyam serogroup and tentatively designated as Kagoshima virus. In 1985 another virus of the Palyam serogroup was isolated from C. oxystoma and from calves. This was designated as Chuzan virus. A subsequent epizootic of congenital abnormalities of calves was found to be caused by this second virus. In this study serological comparison of Kagoshima and Chuzan viruses indicate these viruses to be one and the same virus.
