Three strains of Pasteurella multocida from an outbreak of septicaemia in fallow deer in 1982 (strains P-4674, P-4675 and P-4676) were identified by indirect haemagglutination and gel diffusion precipitin tests as belonging to capsule serogroup B, somatic serotype 3,4. Groups of female CF1 mice, weighing 22 g, received antiserum against haemorrhagic septicaemia strain M-1404, serogroup B, serotype 2 and a fowl cholera strain P-1059, serogroup A, serotype 3. After 24 hours three groups of the mice received i.p. either strain M-1404, P-1059 or P-4674. A fourth group was challenged with strain 989, a serogroup B, serotype 3,4 strain from an ox in Australia where clinical haemorrhagic septicaemia has not been reported. Antiserum against M-1404 and P-1059 protected mice against challenge with strains P-4675 and 989. Antibodies against P-4674 were removed from antiserum against strain M-1404 by adsorption with formalin-killed cells of strain 989, showing the close relationship of the two strains.
