Of 55 sick, injured or orphaned wild raptors examined in Louisiana, USA, 28 were found infected with Haemoproteus spp. and 6 with Leucocytozoon spp. (4 had both). 19 of those with Haemoproteus were Strix varia (21 examined). Haemoproteus was also found in 2 Buteo lineatus, one Falco sparverius, 4 Bubo virginianus and 2 Tyto alba. Leucocytozoon was found in one Buteo jamaicensis, one Accipiter striatus, 2 S. varia and 2 T. alba. Weakened or injured raptors with haemoprotozoal infection took longer to rehabilitate and had a higher mortality rate than raptors without haemoprotozoal infection.
