It is estimated that every year hundreds of thousands of cattle die in Latin America from the bite of rabid vampire bats, more than in all other species combined. Few written observations of the disease have been made since Haupt and Rehaag first noted the association between the cases in cattle and in vampires in 1921. The present report describes the incubation periods, symptomatology, temperature changes, excretion of virus in tears and saliva, white blood cell counts, serum neutralizing antibody titres, and levels of virus in various tissues of three cows that died after having been inoculated with a 'derriengue' (bovine paralytic rabies) virus suspension.
