Morphological studies on the influence of caffeine on experimental coronary cholesterol atherosclerosis in rabbits

Mixed or inbred white Danish rabbits, fed on oats, carrots and hay, were given cholesterol 1 g or 300 mg/day without or with caffeine benzoate 80 or 30 mg/day, respectively, by tube for 90 days. Histological examination of coronary arteries showed that the extent of atherosclerosis was slightly but not significantly lower in the groups given caffeine. Dispersion of the values for lesion extent within mixed and purebred groups indicated that individuals of the same species differ widely in immunity to atherosclerosis. There was no relation between extent of lesions and sex.
