Changes of blood rheology were investigated in 30 experimental cholesterol fed rabbits with blood cholesterol, relative blood viscosity, reduced viscosity of whole blood and plasma, hematocrit, rate of erythrocyte electrophoresis, ESR and the platelet adhesiveness as parameters. There were significant changes in these parameters, such as, increase in viscosity, especially the reduced viscosity of whole blood, ESR and platelet adhesiveness; shortening of erythrocyte electrophoresis time and decrease in hematocrit. In the early stage of experimental atherosclerosis, rheological changes may play an important part in atherogenesis.
