Effect of immobilization on the development of experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits

The permeability of the aortic wall increased under the effect of immobilization within 1 mo. in animals given their usual food. Morphological examination revealed lipidosis of the intima of the aorta and cardiac coronary arteries in 50% of the cases. Preliminary immobilization of animals for 1 mo. with their subsequent upkeep on an atherogenic diet for 5 mo. increased the frequency of sharp and marked atherosclerotic changes in the aorta and coronaries compared to that in animals kept only on an atherogenic diet for the same period. The changes in lipid metabolism and the blood coagulation system under the effect of immobilization were less significant.
