The preventive and therapeutic effect of bigluconate chlorohexidine (BCH) was studied using the model of blue pus keratoconjunctivitis in rabbits who were administered subconjunctively the blue pus bacillus suspension to the area of the upper retrotarsal fold (above the projection of the eyeball upper straight). The preventive application of BCH caused the development of kerato-conjunctivitis which manifested itself by the 9-10th day. When estimating the early therapeutic effect the acute development of the inflammatory reaction was completed by the 10-12th day. A delayed therapeutic application of BCH (4 h after infection) was characterized by a heavier course with the infiltrate formation but without ulceration; the inflammatory process stopped by the 13-15th day. A slight nabula remained in the place of the ulcerating infiltrates in the eye of control animals by the 30-35th day. BCH at a dilution of 1:400, using the given scheme of instillation, might be applied for treating blue pus eye infection in patients.
