Cigarette smoking and cholesterol atherosclerosis of rabbits

Adult male and female albino rabbits were fed to appetite on a standard laboratory diet and water without or with the addition of 2% cholesterol. Some animals from either group were exposed to smoke from 1 cigarette in a simulated smoking machine every day for 11 to 13 months; controls were placed in the smoking chamber but were not exposed to cigarette smoke. Exposure to smoke did not affect atherosclerosis of the aorta or extramural and intramural arteries, visceral lesions or serum lipids of rabbits of either dietary group. One rabbit on normal diet, exposed to smoke, developed focal bronchial mucosal change characterised by slight atypia of mucosal epithelium.
