Selective hypopituitarism. Impaired cell-mediated immunity and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis

The cases are described of a 23-yr-old man and 16-yr-old boy with candidiasis of early onset who developed secondary adrenal failure due to limited adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) reserve. Impaired cell-mediated immunity was demonstrated. Foetal thymus transplantation was successful in immunological reconstitution in 1 patient and hormone replacement therapy was effective in both, with concomitant improvement in the mucocutaneous lesions.
