Lung disease associated with IgG subclass deficiency in chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis

Cases are reported in 4 patients (29-yr-old man, 18-yr-old woman, 4-yr-old girl and 2-yr-old boy) with chronic mucocutaneous candidosis who had recurrent bacterial infections with encapsulated organisms manifested as severe lung disease. All patients had extremely low levels of IgG2 and IgG4 immunoglobulin subclasses, and 3 of the 4 patients tested were unable to mount a normal antibody response to polysaccharide antigens. It is suggested that this humoral deficiency may be related to the patients' increased susceptibility to infection with encapsulated organisms.
