A 71-yr-old woman with chronic mucocutaneous Candida albicans infection was found to have a benign thymoma and impaired cellular immune response. She was anergic to common skin-test antigens and could not be sensitized to fluorodinitrobenzene but her lymphocytes responded normally to phytohaemagglutinin and C. albicans antigen stimulation. This is thought to represent an acquired, adult counterpart of the congenital childhood chronic mucocutaneous candidosis syndrome. Treatment of the thymoma has not yet improved the candidiasis.
