Serum lipids in bilharzial hepatic fibrosis

Total serum lipids and the major serum lipid fractions, including total cholesterol, free cholesterol, phospholipids and triglycerides, and free fatty acids were compared in 38 patients with schistosomal hepatic fibrosis and 28 normal subjects. The concentrations of the total serum lipids and the major serum lipid fractions were generally lower, and plasma free fatty acid levels were significantly higher, in the infected patients. The possible contributory factors are discussed.
