Spleens and livers obtained at autopsy from patients infected with Schistosoma were injected via the main splenic or portal vein with casting material. After the material had set the soft tissue was digested away with hydrochloric acid. The casts demonstrated alterations to the vascular supply of these organs, including newly formed perivascular networks of vessels characteristic of schistosomal liver fibrosis and massive arteriovenous shunts in the spleen of cases of advanced portal hypertension with splenomegaly.
