Phospholipids, cholesterol and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in plasma and coefficient of fat absorption were less in 31 children with cystic fibrosis than in 27 healthy children. Values returned towards normal during treatment with freeze-dried pancreas. In the healthy children, but not in cystic fibrosis, PUFA increased with age. There were significant correlations between the coefficient of fat absorption and the percentage of PUFA in neutral lipids in cystic fibrosis, and that percentage is suggested as an index of the degree of malabsorption.
