Properties of antibody in tracheal mucus of chickens inoculated with Newcastle disease vaccines

Forty-two 90-day-old chicks were inoculated intratracheally with B1 virus and were killed in batches of seven after 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 weeks. Tracheal mucous from each batch was pooled and examined for antibody properties. Antibody was present one week after infection and its principal activity was in the first peak (Sephadex G-200 gel filtration). It was fairly sensitive to 2-mercaptoethanol from 1 to 3 weeks, but resistant after 4 weeks. It was differentiated from IgG and IgM in serum by agar gel precipitation and immunoelectrophoresis. Its molecular weight was between those of IgG and IgM in serum. This immunoglobulin might correspond to the IgA which occurs in mammals.
