The efficacy of 4 different vaccination programmes against Newcastle disease (ND) was tested using 5 different vaccines (La Sota- and Hitchner Br drinking water vaccines, combined vaccine with Hitchner B1- and fowl pox virus for wing web application, Hitdmer Bi- an killed Al OH, adsorbed German ND-Vaccine for intramuscular injection). A total of 2317 HNL-Nick chicks of a single hatch was observed over a period of 46 weeks. All 4 vaccination programmes were tolerated by the chicks without any adverse reaction. All programmes protected the flocks against clinical disease and mortality In case of massive ND-superinfection. However, none of the programmes was able to prevent a drop in egg production. The production seemed to be least affected in case of the 2X La Sofa- or the 5X Hitchner B1-drinking water vaccination. Further experiments will have to determine whether a 3X or 4X La Sota-vaccination during rearing time is able to prevent a drop in performance of laying flocks.
