Antibody response of swine to Leptospira canicola and Leptospira icterohaemorrhagiae

Serum samples collected from pigs seven months after vaccination with an inactivated bivalent vaccine against L. icterohaemorrhagiae and L. canicola contained high levels of protective antibodies, as determined by hamster protection test, but low levels of agglutinating antibodies. After challenge with virulent leptospires, the macroscopic agglutination titres reached a peak 10-15 days later, then started to decrease. In contrast, high levels of protective antibodies were detected in serum samples 43 days after challenge.
