Cytopathic effects of Leptospira serotypes patoc and canicola in three kidney cell culture systems

The leptospires were grown in monkey kidney, porcine kidney, and baby hamster kidney cell cultures at 37 deg C in Eagle's minimal essential medium supplemented with 10% bovine foetal serum. A cytopathic effect was observed in the three kidney culture cells when infected with either leptospiral serotype. A similar CPE was observed in the kidney cells after infection with spent medium free of leptospires. Leptospires grown in culture medium in the absence of kidney cells reached a greater population than leptospires grown in cell culture.
