The results of histological examination of 123 horses, regarded as having equine infectious anaemia (EIA) on diagnostic criteria based chiefly on the detection of sideroleucocytes in the blood from the jugular vein, were compared with those of CF and immunodiffusion tests. Characteristic lesions of EIA were recognized clearly in 94 horses. Of these horses, only 28 were positive or doubtful in the CF test, whereas 89 were positive in the immunodiffusion test. Of the 29 horses without EIA lesions, 18 were negative in both the CF and immunodiffusion tests. Histological lesions characteristic of the early stage of EIA were found in 15 horses. Of these horses, 11 were positive or doubtful in the CF test, and another 11 were positive or doubtful in the immunodiffusion test. Four of 5 horses which were negative in the immunodiffusion test in spite of the presence of EIA lesions were also included in these 15 horses; they seemed to be in the stage prior to the appearance of antibody. Eleven horses without characteristics lesions were positive in the immunodiffusion test. Of the 18 horses free from EIA lesions and antibodies, 10 had lesions of other diseases; four of the remaining 8 were 1-3 months of age.
