A Gram-positive coccus was isolated (pure culture) from two cows suffering from chronic mastitis. Under aerobic conditions at 37 deg C, the strain produced relatively large, pearly-white, strongly mucoid colonies. The latter characteristic became rapidly less marked on further incubation. The organism did not produce haemotoxin. According to Bergey's Manual the strain was classified as M. caseolyticus, and by use of Baird-Parker's (1966) system the organism belonged to Group II, Subgroup 5.
