Bovine mastitis caused by Bacillus cereus

Additional information is given on the incidence of Bacillus cereus mastitis in the UK. In a mastitis surveillance scheme, 14 788 mastitic milk samples from 363 herds were examined between Jan. and Dec. 1980. B. cereus was thought to be the causal organism in 45 samples (0.3%) from 30 herds. In a 2nd letter by K. G. Johnston, the incidence of B. cereus mastitis in Australia is reported. Since 1961, nearly 70 cases have been recorded. Diagnosis of mastitis due to this normally nonpathogenic organism is discussed briefly.
