Infrared spectra of Bacillus cereus cells

Spectra of 16 strains of aerobic bacilli belonging to B. cereus and B. subtilis were studied depending on culture age and nutrient broth composition. IR-spectra of the whole cells of the studied species of 4-h cultures are of the same type. Differences between the mentioned species are detected in the spectrograms of 24-h cells. The effect of glucose in the nutrient medium on the appearance of 1740 cm-1 band and changes in the spectral curve shape are connected with an increase in poly-.beta.-hydroxybutyric acid concentration in the cell. The B. cereus strains differ from each other by the intensity ratio of the 1740 and 1650 cm-1 bands. Analysis of spectrogram of the whole cells of B. cereus and their cell membranes showed that IR-spectrum of whole cells is mainly determined by the components of the cell membrane composition.
