A radial immunodiffusion [RID] test for the diagnosis of bovine subclinical mastitis by determining bovine serum albumin levels in milk samples is described. With this test, 8.25% and with the International Dairy Federation (IDF) criteria 5% of the quarters examined were found subclinically mastitic. Only 2% of the quarters were positive when IDF criteria and RID test results were compared. It appeared to be a relatively simple, specific and promising test have superiority over conventional tests. The test could serve to establish the physiological and pathological state of the mammary epithelium, the diagnosis of teat canal infections without resorting to puncture of gland cistern and the tissue compatibility and udder irritation resulting from intramammary drug infusion.
