The use of rifamycin SV in the treatment of bovine mastitis

Most streptococcal strains were completely inhibited in culture at rifamycin SV concentrations below 0.05 micro g/ml. All strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Staph, epidermidis and Micrococcus spp. were inhibited by 0.01-0.04 micro g/ml. Up to 1.0 micro /ml was required to inhibit some strains of Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Str. zooepidemicus and Str. faecalis. Rifamycin SV, administered at 25-100 mg per quarter was well tolerated by both lactating and dry cows under field conditions.
