In 6 experiments, 2 or 4 cows were given an intramammary infusion of 0.05-5 mg Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide endotoxin to produce acute coliform mastitis, and were treated 1.5 h later with dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) plus or minus flumethasone or with 0.85% NaCl (control). Apart from a possible antipyretic effect that may be attributed to the DMSO/flumethasone combination, there was no conclusive evidence of any protection against the effects of E. coli endotoxin on vascular permeability or on decreasing the rate of diapedesis of leucocytes into the quarter.
