With the aid of plasmid fingerprints it was shown that E. coli from bovine mastitis without antibiotic resistance harbours few plasmids, and none in common. This is in contrast to the enteropathogenic E. coli O149:91 K88 ac in pigs. It was shown that the E. coli strain isolated in an acute mastitis was also present in the faeces of the cow, but the strain could not be found in the faeces of the other 10 cows in the same herd. This supports the supposition that the cow's udder is infected by traces of faeces in the immediate proximity.
