Plasmid mediated resistance to silver ions in Escherichia coli

A silver ion-resistant strain of E. coli was developed by serial passages in gradually increasing concentrations of silver nitrate. A resistance of 70 ppm was achieved in 20 passages. No concomitant development of resistance to other heavy metal ions and antibiotics was observed. The silver ion resistance could be cured by the classical curing agents like acridine orange, ethidium bromide and sodium dodecyl sulphate. The curing rates of 40-70 percent were observed. The inter and intrageneric transfer of resistance to Salmonella typhimurium and E. coli could be achieved at frequency rates ranging from 1.5 .times. 10-3 to 4.0 .times. 10-2.
