Antiseptic activity of domiphen bromide on the yeast Candida in the mouth

The role of the yeasts Candida and especially of the species albicans is aggravating for the prognosis of serious diseases; this is a well-known problem in hospitals but difficult to face. This research investigated the effectiveness of antiseptic activity of the oral suspension of Domiphen bromide on the yeast flora, in the oral cavity of 52 heavily debilitated patients and 13 healthy subjects living in the hospital environment. The two groups were checked before the administration for the control. Following the mouth-wash with the antiseptic, they were again checked for the presence of yeast in the mouth after 10, 30, 60 and 120 min. Domiphen bromide, in the first group, 10 min, after administration exhibited a moderate mycostatic activity whereas for the 30, 60 and 120 min it was rather weak. In the second group it had a very strong mycostatic activity even in the 120 min.
