The activity of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase from bacteria (Escherichia coli) was compared with activities of RNA polymerases from yeasts A (I) and B (II), in the presence of various DNA. None of the yeast polymerases showed preference for yeast nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. Yeast DNA were as a rule less active than calf thymus DNA and T4 phage DNA as templates for bacterial polymerase. A number of yeast DNA preparations, which were not transcribed by polymerase, preserved the quality of binding enzymes. The incubation conditions were tested for their effect on yeast polymerase activity.
