Spectrophotometric analysis of whole-cell pastes and serological identification tests performed using the immunoprecipitation techniques were carried out with 8 spp. among the genera Candida and Lodderomyces. Antigenic structures of C. parapsilosis (form I) and C. parakrusei are almost identical and very distinct from that of L. elongisporus, their suggested perfect form (this species may be considered as the ascosporogenous form of C. parapsilosis form II). The varieties of C. parapsilosis and C. obtusa may be regarded as separate species while C. obtusa and C. lusitaniae must be considered as the imperfect forms of Clavispora lusitaniae. The rather low relatedness of both clusters in the parapsilosis group is understandable since they include species having their perfect forms in 3 different ascosporogenous genera. These data, in agreement with those obtained by other molecular studies point out the suggested heterogeneity of the genus Candida and confirm the significance of immunoprecipitation in yeast classification. Analysis of low-temperature absorption spectra of cytochromes correlates with other results; this original taxonomic approach gives new appropriate arguments for systematics based on natural relationships.
