Leaves of Ocimum sanctum have been reported to possess abortifacient and antifertility activity in female rats. To our knowledge there are no corresponding reports in male rats and hence the present study was undertaken to investigate the antispermatogenic activity of cold benzene extract of O. sanctum in male rats. 0. sanctum at dose levels of 100, 150 and 200 mg/kg altered the weights of testis significantly while it did not have any significant effect on epididymis, seminal vesicle, prostate and vas deferens. It was also effective in reducing significantly the sperm count and motility. These parameters are androgen dependent.
