Labeled valine, leucine, acetate and glucose were fed to O. canum and M. citrata to study the biosynthesis of linalool and linalyl acetate. The precursors were fed to intact plants and to fresh stem cuttings for different periods of time. Valine was the best precursors were fed to intact plants and to fresh stem cuttings for different periods of time. Valine was the best precursor for the biosynthesis of linalool and linalyl acetate in both the experimental plants. Maximum incorporation of valine was observed when fed along with non-radioactive glucose. Valine is possibly involved in the synthesis of dimethyl allyl pyrophosphate through non-mevalonic acid pathway.
