Antigenic and immunogenic activity of influenza virus virion components

A comparative study of the antigenic activity and immunogenicity of intact inactivated influenza virus, V-antigen, pronase-treated V-antigen which possessed only neuraminidase activity and of the nucleocapsid was carried out in mice using the A/Krasnodar 101/59 H2N2 strain of influenza virus. Antibody for nucleocapsid was found not to protect mice against subsequent virus infection. The antigenic and immunogenic activity of neuraminidase contained in pronase-treated V-antigen was much lower than that of hemagglutinin. It is suggested that the main role in the immunity to influenza is played by an tibody for hemagglutinin; antibody for neuraminidase is of auxiliary importance.
