Influenza virus strains were inactivated with formalin in concentrations used for the production of vaccines and diagnostics. Samples for testing were taken after 2 wk and 1, 3, 6 and 12 mo. of storage at 4.degree. C. HA titer and antigenic properties were tested with homologous and heterologous antisera. Over a period of time, HA titers of both A and B strains decreased. Antigenic specificity changed more quickly and clearly in strain B. When formalin is used for inactivation, a shorter exposure time should be used.
