The insecticidal action of vapour of the oil extracted from the rhizomes of Acorus calamus on the eggs and nymphs of Dysdercus koenigii (F.) was investigated in the laboratory in India. When eggs 0-120 h old were placed in petri dishes with filter paper that had been treated with solutions of the oils, hatching was greatly reduced, and the nymphs that hatched died, most of them without moulting. First-instar nymphs 0-12 h old were very susceptible to treatment; vapour from a dose of 0.005 ml were sufficient to check their moulting. Nymphs 12-24 h old were more resistant and moulted when exposed to doses of 0.009 ml, while nymphs 24-48 h old moulted at all concentrations, the maximum being 0.11 ml. Second-instar nymphs derived from those treated in their first instar became less active with increasing concentrations of vapour and finally died.
